NBA Power Rankings Week 2 (Nov. 1-Nov. 7)

With the final buzzer Sunday night, Week 2 of the NBA is in the books.  Now that we have seen each club in action for 2 weeks, we have a better understanding of what to expect moving forward.  There will still be plenty of surprises, but the movement this week is not as drastic as the week prior.  Another exciting, action packed week in the Association leads up to Week 2 of the Power Rankings, featuring a new team at number one.  Enter Week 2 of the Power Rankings.

#1 - Cleveland Cavaliers (+1)

Last Week Ranking: 2
Season Record: 6-0
Last Week Record: 3-0
Last Week Results: W vs. Houston (128-120), W vs. Boston (128-122), W @ Philadelphia (102-101)

There's a new number one this week.  Cleveland has been spectacular to start the year, and are now the lone team without a loss.  This is still King James' team, but Uncle Drew is slowing taking a leadership role.  After 6 games, it is Kyrie, not LeBron, who leads the team in scoring with 23.0 PPG.  However, James has been the man when it comes to dropping dimes, including baseline-bending, full court skipping, transition running pocket passes that we saw just this past week.  Despite a close game to a hungry Philadelphia team, Cleveland remains perfect and, for that reason, at the top of my board.

This Week: vs. Atlanta (Tue., Nov. 8), @ Washington (Fri., Nov. 11), vs. Charlotte (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: @ Toronto (94-91) - Week 1, vs. Boston (128-122) - Week 2
Bad Losses: None

#2 - San Antonio Spurs (-1)

Last Week Ranking: 1
Season Record: 5-2
Last Week Record: 1-2
Last Week Results: L vs. Utah (106-91), W @ Utah (100-86), L vs. Los Angeles Clippers (116-92)

Sliding down a spot this week are the San Antonio Spurs.  After an undefeated start to the year, going 3-0 in the first week of play, the Spurs drop 2 games at home, giving them a 5-2 mark on the year.  Not bad, but with the way Cleveland has been playing, not enough to warrant a spot over the undefeated Cavs.  The Spurs lost both games by double digits, and the match up with the Clippers is the one to focus on.  San Antonio had four guys score in double figures, yet no one topped 20.  Kawhi struggled, shooting just 3-13 from the field, good for 14 points.  Coach Pop knows what he's doing and it is early in the season, but to me, aside from the 29 point clobbering victory versus Golden State, San Antonio has looked a step off beat.

This Week: vs. Houston (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Detroit (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Houston (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: @ Golden State (129-100) - Week 1, @ Utah (100-86) - Week 2
Bad Losses: vs. Utah (106-91) - Week 2, vs. Los Angeles Clippers (116-92) - Week 2

#3 - Golden State Warriors (--)

Last Week Ranking: 3
Season Record: 4-2
Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: W @ Portland (127-104), W vs. Oklahoma City (122-96), L @ Los Angeles Lakers (117-97)

The Dubs sit tight this week, staying put at number three after a 2-1 record.  In the match up we had all been waiting for, KD vs. Russ, KD got the last laugh, scoring 39 points on 15-24 shooting en route to a WAfter back to back 20+ point victories against legitimate Western Conference foes, Golden State struggled to do anything in LA when facing the bouncy Lakers.  It's possible that they spotted a game.  After all, the Warriors got it done in the games they needed.  However, there is growing concern after watching the Warriors on Friday night and thinking back to their opener against San Antonio that the arrival of Durant has upset the flow that this team had.  Klay, most noticeably, is in a slump.  But this is something that he, personally, has gone through.  Just last year, through their first 6 games, Thompson was averaging 15.0 PPG, shooting 9-25 from deep.  This year, he's taken more shots through 6 as well, 99 versus 75 last season.  He'll get back on track sooner than later.

This Week: vs. New Orleans (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Dallas (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Denver (Thu., Nov. 10), vs. Phoenix (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: @ Portland (127-104) - Week 2, vs. Oklahoma City (122-96)
Bad Losses: vs. San Antonio (129-100), @ Los Angeles (117-97)

#4 - Los Angeles Clippers (+1)

Last Week Ranking: 5
Season Record: 5-1
Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: L vs. Oklahoma City (85-83), W @ Memphis (99-88), W @ San Antonio (116-92)

LAC swaps places with OKC in the top 4, moving to #4.  We know that this team has it all on paper, their nagging problem has been poor postseason play.  But for the time being, this team is 5-1 and at the top in the Western Conference.  Had it not been for a late fourth quarter drought versus OKC, which saw the Clippers go scoreless for nearly 5 minutes, LA would have a 0 in their loss column and might be a spot or two higher on this ranking.  Still, with a win over San Antonio IN San Antonio, and a convincing win at that, the Clippers are impressing and sit pretty inside the top 5.

This Week: vs. Detroit (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Portland (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Oklahoma City (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Minnesota (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: @ Portland (114-106) - Week 1, @ San Antonio (116-92)
Bad Losses: vs. Oklahoma City (85-83)

#5 - Oklahoma City Thunder (-1)

Last Week Ranking: 4
Season Record: 5-1
Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: W @ Los Angeles Clippers (85-83), L @ Golden State (122-96), W vs. Minnesota (112-92)

Even with a win in Staples Center against the Clips, OKC yields the spot and slips to #5.  I had said in the Week 1 rankings that if the Thunder could go 2-1 in Week 2, they would keep a spot in the top 5.  That is exactly what they did.  With a low-scoring, smothering defensive showing out of OKC against the Clippers, OKC set to battle with Golden State.  This time, however, #35 was on the other side of the court.  The match up that we had all been waiting to see since July 4, Westbrook vs. Durant, was upon us.  The two went through the night with absolutely zero acknowledgmentIt was almost as if they fueled each other.  KD went off, scoring 39 points and gathering 7 rebounds.  Meanwhile, Russ struggled, seeming to press to hard at times.  He shot 4-15 and finished with 20 points.  After an explosive first week, Westbrook has calmed down a bit.  He still posted 27.7 PPG, 7.7 APG and 6.0 RPG in the last three games, but it's not nearly as impressive as the triple double average he had going.

This Week: vs. Miami (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Toronto (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Los Angeles Clippers (Fri., Nov. 11), vs. Orlando (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: @ Los Angeles Clippers (85-83)
Bad Losses: @ Golden State (122-96)

#6 - Toronto Raptors (--)

Last Week Ranking: 6
Season Record: 4-2
Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: W @ Washington (113-103), W vs. Miami (96-87), L vs. Sacramento (96-91)

Sitting still at #6 is Toronto.  The squad from up north continues to get the job, playing well on both sides of the ball.  By now, we should all know who DeMar DeRozan is and what the man is capable of.  He finally started to get some media attention this week after Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook cooled off.  DeRozan now leads the league in scoring, averaging 33.7 PPG.  In his first 5 games, DeRozan scored at least 32 points, mixing in a couple 40 pieces.  This next week will be a bit more challenging for Toronto that what they've faced so far, but they are capable of winning each and every game.  They're still levels below Cleveland, but at this part, there's no question who's #2 in the East.

This Week: @ Oklahoma City (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Charlotte (Fri., Nov. 11), vs. New York (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Detroit (109-91) - Week 1
Bad Losses: vs. Cleveland (94-91) - Week 1, vs. Sacramento (96-91) - Week 2

#7 - Boston Celtics (+3)

Last Week Ranking: 10
Season Record: 3-3
Last Week Record: 1-2
Last Week Results: W vs. Chicago (107-100), L @ Cleveland (128-122), L vs. Denver (123-107)

Boston got revenge on the Bulls after taking the L in Week 1. Following that win, though, Boston dropped two straight.  The one that hurts is the Sunday afternoon showdown with Denver.  The Nuggets came out in full stride, reaching a 42-23 lead after one.  They wouldn't ever get back in this one, with Emmanuel Mudiay scoring 28 points in the first half.  Just as Marcus Smart returns from injury, the Celtics lose newcomer Al Horford and versatile forward Jae Crowder.  Crowder's injury freed up minutes for #3 overall pick Jaylen Brown.  Consistency has been a problem in 20 year olds 6 game career so far, but he flashed potential versus LeBron James and the Cavs, scoring 19 points and grabbing 5 boards.

This Week: @ Washington (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. New York (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Indiana (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: @ Charlotte (104-98) - Week 1, vs. Chicago (107-100) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Chicago (105-99) - Week 1, vs. Denver (123-107) - Week 2

#8 - Charlotte Hornets (+3)

Last Week Ranking: 11
Season Record: 4-1
Last Week Record: 2-0
Last Week Results: W vs. Philadelphia (109-93), W @ Brooklyn (99-95)

The City of Buzz had their way with The City of Brotherly Love Wednesday night, outscoring the Sixers 63-40 in the second half.  Kemba Walker is a legitimate scorer, averaging 24.4 PPG in 6 games.  Aside from him in the scoring department, this isn't really a true number 2 guy.  Batum is second on the team with 14.2, but after him, Cody Zeller, Frank Kaminsky, Marvin Williams, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are all averaging over 9 points a game.  We'll see what happens this week, as Charlotte faces their stiffest competition yet and might have the toughest schedule among teams in Week 3.  Wins against Philly and Brooklyn are nice, but we will begin to see what this team is really made of this week.

This Week: vs. Indiana (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Utah (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Toronto (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Cleveland (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: @ Miami (97-91) - Week 1
Bad Losses: vs. Boston (104-98) - Week 1

 #9 - Utah Jazz (+8)

Last Week Ranking: 18
Season Record: 4-3
Last Week Record: 3-1
Last Week Results: W @ San Antonio (106-91), W vs. Dallas (97-81), L vs. San Antonio (100-86), W @ New York (114-109)

Gordon Hayward is back and the Utah Jazz are loving every minute of it.  Coming back sooner than most thought, Hayward returned to the lineup Sunday to take on the Knicks.  He proceeded to score 28 points in MSG, reminding us all why we are so excited about what this Jazz team can do this year.  Despite a lose at home, Utah was able to squander a win on the road versus the Spurs.  Their scoring issues from last week have quickly diminished.  Look for this team to continue to score with Hayward back and George Hill still getting work done (20.4 PPG, 5.0 APG).

This Week: @ Philadelphia (Mon., Nov. 7), @ Charlotte (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Orlando (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Miami (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: @ San Antonio (106-91) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Los Angeles Clippers (88-75) - Week 1

#10 - Atlanta Hawks (-1)

Last Week Ranking: 9
Season Record: 4-2
Last Week Record: 1-2
Last Week Results: L vs. Los Angeles (123-116), L @ Washington (95-92), W vs. Houston (112-97)

The Hawks slip slightly, moving to the fringe of the top 10 at #10.  Back to back losses don't bode well for a team that began the year 3-0, but Atlanta got back to business Saturday night with a thomping 112-97 victory over the Rockets.  Questions still arise for this team.  Can they be successful without a 20 point scorer?  Is Dwight happy?  What is Schroder's ceiling?  We may be able to piece together the pieces this week when they take on Cleveland and Chicago on back to back nights.

This Week: @ Cleveland (Tue., Nov. 8), vs. Chicago (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Philadelphia (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Houston (112-97) - Week 2
Bad Losses: vs. Los Angeles (123-116) - Week 2, @ Washington (95-92) - Week 2

#11 - Chicago Bulls (-3)

Last Week Ranking: 8
Season Record: 3-3
Last Week Record: 0-3
Last Week Results: L @ Boston (107-100), L vs. New York (117-104), L @ Indiana (111-94)

After a tremendous 3-0 start that saw the introduction of a three point scoring Dwyane Wade, the Bulls flipped the columns this week with an 0-3 mark.  The drastic change has many Bulls fans wondering which team they can expect.  Last weeks Bulls were aggressive on defense and knocking down threes.  This weeks team looked awful on defense.  With a 30 point, 10 rebound game out of Wade Friday night versus the Knicks and 23 point, 9 rebound game out of Butler in Boston, Chicago showed that they are unable to simply outscore teams on a nightly basis.  Defensively, this team needs to tighten up.  Three straight games of giving up 107 or more just won't cut it.

This Week: vs. Orlando (Mon., Nov. 7), @ Atlanta (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Miami (Thu., Nov. 10), vs. Washington (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Boston (105-99) - Week 1, vs. Indiana (118-101) - Week 1
Bad Losses: vs. New York (117-104) - Week 2, @ Indiana (111-94)

#12 - Portland Trail Blazers (-5)

Last Week Ranking: 7
Season Record: 4-3
Last Week Record: 2-2
Last Week Results: L vs. Golden State (127-104), L @ Phoenix (118-115), W @ Dallas (105-95), W @ Memphis (100-94)

Lillard is a beast.  If he's not considered a superstar by now, I don't what more he has to do.  Let's paint the scene in Dallas: Lillard, "defended" by Wesley Matthews, chucks one from a step off the Maverick logo at center court, drilling it.  Next play: Lillard, again "defended" by Matthews, gets a pass Al-Farouq Aminu, hesitates, then rises to bury a three in the face of Matthews, again just inside the logo.  The next game against Memphis, he does it them too.  Baby Dame is in the top 3 in scoring this year with 32.0 PPG.  Although receiving a beating from Golden State and losing a tight overtime game against Phoenix, which featured a clutch And-1 by Lillard to tie it up, Portland is still respectable and a team to watch throughout the year.

This Week: vs. Phoenix (Tue., Nov. 8) , @ Los Angeles Clippers (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Sacramento (Fri., Nov. 11), vs. Denver (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: vs. Utah (113-104)
Bad Losses: vs. Golden State (127-104) - Week 2, @ Phoenix (118-115) - Week 2

#13 - Houston Rockets (--)

Last Week Ranking: 13
Season Record: 3-3
Last Week Record: 1-2
Last Week Results: L @ Cleveland (128-120), W @ New York (118-99), L @ Atlanta (112-97)

Fear The Beard is a real thing.  I just checked.  Since his switch to Point Guard, James Harden has seemingly taken his game to another level.  The scary thing is that we have no idea how high this guy can go.  This week, in 3 games, Harden had 3 double doubles. He's averaging 31.5 PPG, 12.3 APG, and 7.3 RPG.  This is a fun team who likes to get out in transition.  With back to back games against San Antonio later this week, we'll see if this team can legitimately compete or if they'll just be fun to watch.

This Week: @ Washington (Mon., Nov. 7), @ San Antonio (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. San Antonio (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: @ New York (118-99) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Los Angeles Lakers (120-114) - Week 1, @ Atlanta (112-97) - Week 2

#14 - Indiana Pacers (-2)

Last Week Ranking: 12
Season Record: 3-3
Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: W vs. Los Angeles Lakers (115-108), L @ Milwaukee (125-107), W vs. Chicago (111-94)

I'm still a bit puzzled about the Pacers.  They got one back against Chicago, reversing the script in that one.  But their loss to Milwaukee which saw them allow 125 to the Bucks and their Week 1 loss to Brooklyn still confuse me.  For the time being, I'm sticking them in at #14.  I might be the first to say that through 2 weeks, this has looked like Myles Turner's team rather than Paul George's.  They're just too good on paper to not turn things around.  I'm expecting a 3 win week.

This Week: @ Charlotte (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Philadelphia (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Philadelphia (Fri., Nov. 11), vs. Boston (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Chicago (111-94) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Brooklyn (103-94) - Week 1, @ Milwaukee (125-107) - Week 2

#15 - Detroit Pistons (-1)

Last Week Ranking: 14
Season Record: 4-2
Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: W vs. New York (102-89), L @ Brooklyn (109-101), W vs. Denver (103-86)

Detroit Basketball has been solid thus far, going 4-2 and sitting square in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.  A loss to Brooklyn is a bit worrisome, although the Nets are out-performing many of our expectations.  Some good news for Detroit came by the way of Reggie Jackson beginning basketball activities.

This Week: @ Los Angeles Clippers (Mon., Nov. 7), @ Phoenix (Wed., Nov. 9), @ San Antonio (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Denver (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. New York (102-89) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Toronto (109-91) - Week 1, @ Brooklyn (109-101) - Week 2

#16 - Los Angeles Lakers (+6)

Last Week Ranking: 22
Season Record: 4-3
Last Week Record: 3-1
Last Week Results: L @ Indiana (115-108), W @ Atlanta (123-116), W vs. Golden State (117-97), W vs. Phoenix (119-108)

The big movers of the week, behind the Jazz for biggest, are the young guns from LA.  I didn't expect this glimpse into the future to come so early, but it has and I'm enjoying it.  Starting the week with a loss to Indiana didn't seem to phase the Lakers, as they rattled off three straight wins including a primetime victory over the Warriors which saw Larry Nance go full action figure, hand-in-the-face, highlight worthy jam over David West.  The potential is leaking out, and we are all seeing it first hand.  This team can run with the best and are fun to watch doing it.

This Week: vs. Dallas (Tue., Nov. 8), @ Sacramento (Thu., Nov. 10), @ New Orleans (Sat., Nov. 12), @ Minnesota (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: vs. Houston (120-114) - Week 1, vs. Golden State (117-97) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Oklahoma City (113-96) - Week 1

Last Week Record: 1-3
Last Week Results: L @ Minnesota (116-80), W vs. New Orleans (89-83), L vs. Los Angeles Clippers (99-88), L vs. Portland (100-94)

Chandler Parsons was back in the lineup Sunday after a knee injury forced him to miss the first 6 games.  In his first game back, Parsons looked off, going 0-8 from the field in 22 minutes of action.  Prior to Parsons' return, the Grizz were running with James Ennis at Small Forward.  Even with Parsons back, Ennis may have earned himself enough minutes to be productive throughout the season after posting back to back games of 16points, 10 rebounds and 9points, 11 rebounds.

This Week: vs. Denver (Tue., Nov. 8), @ Milwaukee (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Washington (112-103) - Week 1
Bad Losses: @ Minnesota (116-80) - Week 2

Season Record: 2-3
Last Week Record: 1-1
Last Week Results: W vs. Sacramento (108-96), L @ Toronto (96-87)

So far, Miami has been very average.  Look for Winslow and Johnson to continue to be relied on with Josh Richardson returning this week.

This Week: @ Oklahoma City (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Chicago (Thu., Nov. 10), vs. Utah (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: None
Bad Losses: vs. Charlotte (97-91) - Week 1

Fear The Deer!  Milwaukee bounced back this week, winning 3 of their 4 matchups.  Giannis should be considered a star in this league.

This Week: vs. New Orleans (Thu., Nov. 10), vs. Memphis (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Indiana (125-107) - Week 2
Bad Losses: @ Dallas (86-75) - Week 2

Last Week Record: 2-1
Last Week Results: W @ Minnesota (102-99), L @ Detroit (103-86), W @ Boston (123-107)

Despite going 2-1 this week, Denver drops a bit, winning a close one on the road to Minnesota and then dropping one to Detroit.  Where does this team stand after two weeks though?  A fringe playoff contender.

This Week: @ Memphis (Tue., Nov. 8), vs. Golden State (Thu., Nov. 10), vs. Detroit (Sat., Nov. 12), @ Portland (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: @ Boston (123-107) - Week 2

The Knicks hold still at #21.  D Rose had an impressive game back in Chicago, scoring 15 points, handing out 11 assists, and grabbing 7 rebounds.

This Week: vs. Brooklyn (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Boston (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Toronto (Sat., Nov. 12)

After going winless through the first week, Orlando came back and won 3 straight last week.  Now, with this week in mind, Orlando can really make some noise going against Chicago, Utah and OKC.

This Week: @ Chicago (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Minnesota (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Utah (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Oklahoma City (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: vs. Washington (88-86) - Week 2

Last Week Results: L vs. Toronto (113-103), W vs. Atlanta (95-92), L @ Orlando (88-86)

Washington got their first W Friday against the Hawks.  Their loss on the road against Orlando hurts though, losing by 2 and only scoring 86 points.

This Week: vs. Houston (Mon., Nov. 7), vs. Boston (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Cleveland (Fri., Nov. 11), @ Chicago (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Atlanta (95-92) - Week 2

The Suns made some noise this week with back-to-back Overtime victories versus Portland and New Orleans.  This young team looks a few years away from making serious noise, but they are still entertaining to watch now.

This Week: @ Portland (Tue., Nov. 8), vs. Detroit (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Brooklyn (Sat., Nov. 12), @ Golden State (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: vs. Portland (118-115) - Week 2
Bad Losses: vs. Sacramento (113-94) - Week 1

Season Record: 1-4
Last Week Record: 1-2
Last Week Results: W vs. Memphis (116-80), L vs. Denver (102-99), L @ Oklahoma City (112-92)

Tom Thibodeau's Wolves picked up a win Tuesday, demolishing the old Grizzlies 116-80.  However, dropping the next two does not bode well for this club.  They need to straighten some things out if they're going to take the big strides that many thought they would this season.

This Week: @ Brooklyn (Tue., Nov. 8), @ Orlando (Wed., Nov. 9), vs. Los Angeles Clippers (Sat., Nov. 12), vs. Los Angeles Lakers (Sun., Nov. 13)

Big Wins: vs. Memphis (116-80) - Week 2

Last Week Record: 1-1
Last Week Results: W vs. Detroit (109-101), L vs. Charlotte (99-95)

The tenacious Nets keep games close, and picked up yet another win this week.  They nearly got another versus Charlotte.  With Jeremy Lin sidelined, someone will have to step up in the scoring department (I'm looking at you, Bojan).

This Week: vs. Minnesota (Tue., Nov. 8), @ New York (Wed., Nov. 9), @ Phoenix (Sat., Nov. 12)

Big Wins: vs. Indiana (103-94) - Week 1, vs. Detroit (109-101) - Week 2

SacTown is more like SadTown right now.  A promising first week was followed up by 3 straight losses.  However, the win in Toronto Sunday could generate some momentum.

Falling to the bottom are the Pelicans.  They have been so close to winning multiple games this year.  So close still doesn't equate to wins though.
