FAST BREAK (November 30): ACC/Big Ten Challenge Concludes with Exciting Finish

Wednesday gave us a number of exciting contests, including the final day of competition in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.  The ACC reigns superior, clinching the contest Wednesday night for the first time since 2008.  However, Wednesday night's ACC/Big Ten Challenge wasn't all of the college basketball that was played.  Mid-majors were in action and the West Coast featured some intense basketball.  To get you caught up on all things college basketball, here is your...

FAST BREAK

(3) North Carolina (7-1) - 67
(13) Indiana (5-1) - 76

I'll be the first to say that I was not expecting this outcome.  Indiana got out to a big lead from the start and never looked back.  North Carolina even made a late run after trailing by as much as 17, but every time the Tar Heels built up some form of momentum, IU was right there to respond.  Remember, this was the same Indiana team that lost to Fort Wayne last week.  Last night, though, they looked like the Indiana team we've come to expect and received tremendous play out of sophomore forward OG Anunoby.  This highlight generating high flyer went for 16 points and 5 rebounds.  Quite possibly the best play of the young season came late in the first half on a lob pass from mid-court by Josh Newkirk to "The Real OG", who flushed home the dunk, sending the home fans in Assembly Hall into a ruckus.

Notable Players:

IND - OG Anunoby (29 minutes, 16 points, 5 rebounds)
IND - James Blackmon Jr. (28 minutes, 14 points, 9 rebounds, 3-6 from three)
UNC - Justin Jackson (31 minutes, 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4-7 from three)
UNC - Joel Berry II (31 minutes, 8 points, 8 assists, 1-6 from three)

Ohio State (6-1) - 61
(6) Virginia (7-0) - 63

Boy, this one was close!  Ohio State dominated for most of the game, leading at the half 36-24, but #6 Virginia came out of the halftime break and immediately trimmed the lead to 1 within 4 minutes.  Virginia's senior guard London Perrantes was phenomenal tonight, scoring 19 points.  He was the catalyst for Virginia's second half surge, drilling some big threes down the stretch.  Ohio State is a tough team and almost stole one tonight, but Virginia's late run got the better of the Buckeyes.

Notable Players:

VIRG - London Perrantes (33 minutes, 19 points, 4-8 from three)
OSU - Jae'Sean Tate (30 minutes, 14 points, 9 rebounds)
OSU - Marc Loving (39 minutes, 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists)
OSU - JaQuan Lyle (37 minutes, 12 points, 5 assists, 8 turnovers)

(12) Saint Mary's (6-0) - 66
Stanford (6-2) - 51

Some late night action out west featured an entertaining contest between Saint Mary's and Stanford.  Despite the final score, Stanford held the lead at the half, up 30-26 on the #12 Gaels It was a similar story as Ohio State/Virginia to start the second half, with Saint Mary's pouncing out to 38-30 lead 3:44 seconds in.  Stanford made it interesting after the under-8-minute TV Timeout, cutting the lead to just 3, but following that, Saint Mary's exploded on an 18-6 run to finish off the Cardinal.

Notable Players:

SMC - Calvin Hermanson (36 minutes, 25 points, 5 rebounds, 7-9 from three)
SMC - Jock Landale (29 minutes, 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks)
SMC - Emmett Naar (38 minutes, 5 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds)
STAN - Reid Travis (30 minutes, 8 points, 5 rebounds)

(15) Purdue (5-2) - 64
(14) Louisville (6-1) - 71

After blowing a 22 point lead to Baylor last Friday, Louisville was able to bounce back and win against a good Purdue basketball team.  Purdue trailed by as much as 18 in this contest, but were somehow able to cut that deficit to just 4 with 14.4 seconds left.  Louisville was able to finish them off with sound defense, not letting Purdue have their way offensively.  The Boilermakers struggled to get 7' 2" junior Isaac Haas involved, as he finished with a mere 8 points on 2-9 shooting.  Credit Rick Pitino and his Cardinals.  They could have folded after a devastating "Battle 4 Atlantis" tournament championship loss, but instead, they came out Wednesday night focused and poised.

Notable Players:

LOU - Ray Spalding (26 minutes, 11 points, 9 rebounds, 5-5 from field)
LOU - Donovan Mitchell (22 minutes, 8 points, 5 rebounds)
PURCaleb Swanigan (35 minutes, 14 points, 11 rebounds, 6 turnovers)
PUR - Isaac Haas (24 minutes, 8 points, 5 rebounds)

Washington (4-3) - 71
TCU (7-0) - 86

Who saw this 7-0 TCU start to the season coming?  The Horned Frogs continue to impress, beating Washington last Saturday in Vegas and then getting the better of them again Wednesday night, this time back home in Texas.  First year Head Coach Jamie Dixon seems to have his group motivated and hungry for more.  Back-to-back wins against Washington and their star guard Markelle Fultz is note-worthy stuff.  We'll see what happens when TCU takes on the Big 12's finest, but for the time being, it's the Horned Frogs and Baylor who sit atop the conference standings.

Notable Players:

TCU - Alex Robinson (32 minutes, 16 points, 7 assists)
TCU - Kenrich Williams (32 minutes, 10 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists)
WASH - Markelle Fultz (34 minutes, 21 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists)
WASH - Noah Dickerson (29 minutes, 7 points, 11 rebounds

Temple (5-2) - 78
Saint Joseph's (3-3) - 72
Temple's Obi Enechionyia (Photo by USA Today)

Temple is on a roll right now, defeating Saint Joe's after back-to-back victories over then #25 Florida State and then #19 West Virginia.  A tight game throughout, Temple was able to maintain control and seal the deal with a late three by Obi Enechionyia, who has been absolutely tearing it up this season with 21.0 ppg and 8.4 rpg.  This is now 4 straight wins for the Owls after early season losses to New Hampshire and UMASS.

Notable Players:

TEMP - Obi Enechionyia (40 minutes, 26 points, 5 rebounds, 6-12 from three)
TEMP - Quinton Rose (24 minutes, 14 points, 6 rebounds)
SJU - Shavar Newkirk (38 minutes, 22 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists)
SJU - Lamarr Kimble (37 minutes, 12 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds)

Virginia Tech (6-1) - 73
Michigan (5-2) - 70

Once again, we had another halftime lead flip-flop in the second half.  Michigan controlled the pace for the entire first, jumping out to a 17-4 lead.  However, Virginia Tech was able to rally behind senior forward Zach LeDay, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, to pick up their sixth win of the season and add another win for the ACC in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Notable Players:

VT - Zach LeDay (25 minutes, 18 points, 6 rebounds)
VT - Justin Robinson (38 minutes, 11 points, 4 assists)
MICH - Zak Irvin (37 minutes, 23 points, 5 rebounds, 10-20 from field)
MICH - Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (36 minutes, 13 points, 6 rebounds)

Middle Tennessee (7-1) - 77
Ole Miss (5-2) - 62

Many probably remember Middle Tennessee from last season's NCAA Tournament, when, as the #15 seed in the Midwest Regional, the Blue Raiders upset #2 seed Michigan State.  This season, Middle Tennessee has looked just as impressive and are sitting pretty at 7-1.  Their win Wednesday night over Ole Miss definitely generated some buzz.  The way they won did as well.  Middle Tennessee opened the game on a 16-1 run and led the Rebels at the half 48-19.  Ole Miss made a surge to start the second half but it quickly fizzled out.  With this win, these Blue Raiders add a very nice non-conference win to their resume and look like one of the toughest mid-major programs in the nation to start the season.

Notable Players:

MTSU - Reggie Upshaw (36 minutes, 15 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists)
MTSU - Giddy Potts (35 minutes, 20 points, 4 assists, 4-6 from three)
MISS - Deandre Burnett (33 minutes, 15 points, 10-10 from free throw)
MISS - Sebastian Saiz (34 minutes, 8 points, 9 rebounds)

Louisiana Tech (3-3) - 59
California (5-1) - 68
California's Ivan Rabb (Photo by Rick Scuteri/AP)

Cal has to be happy to have sophomore forward Ivan Rabb back after missing two games with a toe injury.  Rabb made his return Wednesday night and made his present known.  He dominated from the tip til the buzzer, which sounded after Louisiana Tech clawed their way back to force overtime.  In OT though, it was all Golden Bears, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-2.  Rabb finished the night with 25 points on 9-12 shooting and gathered 13 rebounds.

Notable Players:

CAL - Ivan Rabb (36 minutes, 25 points, 13 rebounds, 9-12 from field)
CAL - Charlie Moore (40 minutes, 19 points, 5 turnovers)
LT - Derric Jean (39 minutes, 13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists)
LT - Erik McCree (42 minutes, 11 points, 11 rebounds, 4-16 from field)

Nebraska (4-3) - 58
Clemson (4-2) - 60

This one came down to grit and tough defense by Clemson.  Nebraska ran at a pace intended on wearing down the Tigers, but Clemson held strong and picked up a quality win.  The Cornhuskers had multiple chances to take the lead late in the game but failed to do so, with a 59-58 score showing for 1:18 of the final 1:23 seconds left.  A missed jumpshot and two missed layups later, and Clemson survived to go to 4-2 on the season.

Notable Players:

CLEM - Jaron Blossomgame (35 minutes, 15 points, 3 blocks)
CLEM - Sidy Djitte (33 minutes, 6 points, 9 rebounds)
NEB - Glynn Watson Jr. (36 minutes, 20 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals)
NEB - Ed Morrow (31 minutes, 10 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks)
